Tribute: "El Maestro Zylinski" by Jackie Clark.
Dear friends.
Libertango's Saturday classes will resume at 'You
Should Be Dancing' studio
from September 1, 2001, and we will be starting at the usual time of 2pm.
This represents a change of venue from the Lesbian and Gay Center, to whom
belongs our deepest gratitude for their long-standing support of our
venture. In spite of the change of location, our classes will be conducted
in the same independence of spirit as before, with the same mission of
providing the lesbian and gay community with a place to learn in safety and
trust.
For the time-being, Ian will be teaching these classes with the help of Nan,
as Walter takes a sabbatical. Please see both letters and poem below.
I will be leading students through a thorough curriculum all the way to what
I call "black-belt" level, and continuing to develop in everyone the
underlying skills of balance, pivoting, walking, holds, weight-changes,
syncopations, agility and so on. The ultimate goal is that we all grow into
our own choreographers, musical interpreters, and inventors of the dance. It
is poetry written by our feet. I want to impart the words, language skills,
and fluidity that underlie this most spectacular and beautiful of arts.
To this end, I will blend drills and exercises, on the one hand, with
playfulness and inventiveness and joy on the other. That we may be
well-rounded dancers, at once grounded in solid technique and borne on airy
inspiration.
I will also delineate levels of experience more clearly, with a view to
establishing different time slots for groups at the same level. This will
ensure that no-one is overwhelmed with the complexity of new material, on
the one hand, or insufficiently challenged, on the other.
As always, I will shun all dogma and encourage freedom of leading and
following, irrespective of gender, along with developing future teachers as
our venture grows.
With all good wishes.

Letter from Walter Zylinski to Friends and Students of Libertango Dance
Company:
"To everyone who has been in my class, I would like to thank you - for your
support and for being there. What you guys have given me is incredibly
beautiful.
At this moment, I will take a long break. Please accept my apologies that I
won't be there for you, but I will let you know in the near future, perhaps
this wintertime, what I am up to.
Any questions, please e-mail Ian and Nan.
With lots of love.
Walter.
Letter from Ian Reed to Friends and Students of Libertango Dance Company:
I want to take this opportunity to thank Walter for the extraordinary
generosity and kindness he has shown me in the years since I began this
wonderful adventure of dancing Argentine Tango.
More than any other person, Walter opened my eyes to the infinite
possibilities of the dance and to its true spiritual meaning. I have basked
in his radiance and charisma, danced alongside him in joy and inspiration,
and now take up his mantle to pursue his tradition - one that champions an
individual's freedom to unfold his or her own identity and expression.
It is a magnificent journey and one I will walk through eternity. Thank you,
Walter, my dear friend and inspiration.
With love.
Ian.
