What is the SHSAT or SSHSAT?
The New York City Specialized High School Admission Test (SHSAT) is the entrance exam required for acceptance into one of the NYC selective magnet high Schools. The exam was previously known as SSHSAT ~ Specialized Science High School Admissions Test, because the three original high schools, Bronx-Sci, Stuy, and Brooklyn Tec, emphasized science.

Who should take the SSHSAT?
New York City 8th and 9th grade students who wish to attend one of the specialized high schools.

Which are NYC specialized high schools?
There were three NYC science specialized high schools:

  • Stuyvesant High School (Manhattan)
  • Bronx Science High School (Bronx)
  • Brooklyn Technical High School (Brooklyn)
However, in 2002, three additional high schools opened in collaboration with the City University of New York:
  • High School of American Studies at Lehman College (Bronx)
  • Queens High School for the Sciences at York College (Queens)
  • High School for Math, Engineering and Science at City College (Manhattan)

When is the SHSAT offered?
The SHSAT is offered sometime in the last week in October or first week in November. In 2003, the SHSAT exam will be offered on October 25 & 26 and November 8 & 9

How does a student register for the SHSAT?
Only students who reside in one of the five boroughs of New York City are allowed to take the exam. Registration is available through the student's school guidance counselor.

What is the SHSAT Test Structure
The SHSAT consists of two parts that have to be completed in 2 1/2 hours.

  1. Verbal Section (45 questions)
    • Scrambled Paragraphs
    • Logical Reasoning
    • Reading Comprehension
  2. Math Section (50 questions)
    • Arithmetic
    • Algebra
    • Geometry

How does the SHSAT determine admission to one of the specialized high-schools?
Number of correct questions in the SHSAT determine the Raw score (out of 100), which in turn is converted to a scaled score (200-800). Candidates are ranked, and a "cut-off" score for each school is established based upon: overall scores, number of students selecting a school as their first choice and the number of spaces available. Places are awarded to those students who earn the highest scores on the entrance exam and are top-ranked.
